Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

For anyone who has not witness the greatness that is Robert Redford and Paul Newman, I highly recommended catching up on these OGs. These dude were doing stick ups in movies when you still needed bombs to blow open safes, shit is wild. Backed by the Hole in the Wall gang, Butch and the Kid tear up not only the west, but Bolivia as well. Gabi I dont know if you saw any of these character while you where down in Colombia, but Redford and his bitch were sticking up banks all across the Southern American continent. Highlights of this film are Paul Newmans love of whore houses, Redfords handy work with a pistol, and the mysterious Indian scout that chases them across the West. All I can say is that if we were around at this time, I think we would have to get a least one train robbery together, looks like a great way to spend a friday night.

This Is England (Shane Meadows, 2006)

A strange phenomenon occurs here in Tunisia. DVD’s are ridiculously cheap. They have DVD stores everywhere, and you don’t rent them. You just pay a dollar fifty and it’s yours, forever. Problem is that I would say about half of the movies they have there are really really shitty American movies. For instance, did you know that they made ANOTHER American Pie, only this one is based in Mexico? Despite this, you can find some gems. This Is England is one of them.

This movie reinforces that midlands England in the 80’s (and maybe still) is one of the most depressing places on earth. I don’t think that I see the sun appear once in this entire movie. The plot follows Shaun, a 12 year old who gets picked on at school. His dad has recently died in the Faulkalnd Islands war and he is small for his age. Basically, dudes life sucks. One day while walking home he meets woody and his gang of punks. When I say punks, I mean that they are into punk music and dress accordingly. It’s pretty awesome and there are some cute english punk girls sporting some wild hairstyles that they somehow pull off. Woody proceeds to take Shaun under his wing and give him confidence, get him pussy, etc. Things take a turn though when an old member of the punk scene in Nottingham (where the movie is based) comes back from jail as a supporter of the British National Front (basically racist skinheads). Drama ensues and I’m not going to say much more because you should see the movie to find out what happens. All in all, great movie that touches on a lot of social aspects that affected England and the world both then and now. The movie also features an unreal soundtrack of some classic classic reggae. Most of the actors are actually from the city where it is filmed too so that really adds to it.

Highly recommended. You don’t have to go out and rent it/download it right away, but next time your thinking “hey, what movie should we see?” go on down to Liberty video (I assume they are still around) and rent This Is England.
