I’m feelin Gucci Mane a lot right now.  Real happy to see this dude succeeding.  Right now it feels like he almost never even went to jail, his career just kept going.  However, before this song I thought he was just kinda limited to slowed down flow.  However, he kinda kills it by switching it up a little on this song.  GETT’EM GUCCI!!!!

Discovery is a side project between some hipsters (notably a member of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot).  Quality electro/singing/hip hop beats.  Digging it.  Once again big ups to JL for pointing this out.  Can cop it at Amazon or you can google “Discovery LP Mediafire” if you want it for free.  Some good last days of summer music.

Michigan Football Flashback: Michigan vs. Michigan Special Teams vs. Washington 2002

"if he hits it, he is a hero in Michigan for years to come"

So I was perusing through Wolverine Historians collection of videos on Youtube and I noticed he mentioned that he even had videos of a few of the ugly, if not forgotten wins.  Every Michigan fan has moments that are uniquely memorable for them, and this game vs #9 Washington was one of those games i’ll never forget.  I was in going into 8th grade, and I was well into the age when you really start to take in interest in college sports and figure out whats going on.  The 2002 team was one with a lot of question marks and upside.  The emerging Chris Perry was splitting time with stalwart tailback/fullback BJ Askew.  The O-Line, a group that would end up being in my opinion the best of the Carr era, was anchored by names like Chris Morgan, David Baas, and Tony Pape.  Bennie Joppru lined up at Tight End for the Wolverines, Joppru was never an unbelievable talent but he got the job done with grit and toughness and went on to be one of the more highly regarded captains in recent Michigan memory.  The defense was led by names like Shawn Lazarus, Cato June, Victor Hobson, Julius Curry, and Marlin Jackson.  John Navarre was lining up behind center, the Jr had been a source of both frustration and joy for Michigan fans throughout his career.  While this dichotomy is widely seen across the board for many multi year starters, few Michigan Qb’s were in and out of the doghouse like John Navarre.  Also note some of the freshmen on the 2002 roster, guys like Avant, Edwards, Pierre Woods, David Harris, Massaquoi, Massey, and Gabe Watson would all go on to have promising careers later on.

John Navarre has no idea what play was just called

My dad and I parked near Lawton Elementary school and walked through the Pioneer Prarie to the game, our standard gameday route to the stadium.  I remember it being hot, like 95 degrees, and that everyone was excited to be opening up the season against a decent Pac-10 team rather than the usual cupcakes (this game would also mark the beginning of a long line of frustration due to scheduling Pac-10 teams in the non-conference schedule).  The Offense looked pretty good in the first half, Chris Perry broke off a huge run for a TD on the second play of the game and Navarre hit yung Braylon (80) on a deep bomb at the beginning of the 2nd quarter.  Now, Phil Brabbs had missed two FG’s in the first half which didnt seem like big deal since it was the first game of the season and thats ok for special teams.  Those misses would come back to haunt Michigan as Washington continually fought back into the game and took the lead 29-28 with 6 remaining in the 4th quarter.  With three minutes remaining Troy Neinberg had an opportunity to take the lead for the Wolverines with a 35 yard field goal, which he missed…The defense ended up getting the ball back and Navarre hit Braylon with a pass at the 45 which he funbled, however the ball was recovered by Tyrese Butler for a first down.  To make things even more exciting, on the next play the Washington defense had too many men on the field resulting in a 15 yard penalty.  This set up who else but Phil Brabbs for the FG with 5 seconds left.  The rest of course is history:

Michigan Football Flashback: The Mauling in East Lansing

Mgoblog’s post featuring one of Wolverine Historians videos from the 97 Rose Bowl got me all starry eyed for Michigan football.  Remember that national championship defense in 1997?  The number one defense in the country?  Just in case you forgot how good they were, reminisce in the Michigan Daily’s recounting of the 1997 thrashing in East Lansing.

“The Wolverines took what they wanted when they wanted, leaving no doubt that they have the best defense in the Big Ten and maybe in the nation. Michigan’s offense was idling along in first gear. No matter. The defense could have won this game all by itself.” -Daily

“The Defense completely choked it out of them”-Jim Brandstatter

About halfway through the clip they start doing the Michigan State bit.
